suggère pas que nous renoncions à notre désir de conserver d’autres espèces, mais plutôt que nous élaborions un système de valeurs qui concilierait les intérêts de tous les animaux, et pas seulement ceux à qui nous choisissons de donner la préférence dans le siècle ou la décennie qui sont les nôtres.

Les raisons qui ont motivé les tueries de bisons et les tueries de moutons férals sont similaires en ce que les deux espèces ont été prises pour cible parce qu’elles portaient atteinte à notre idée de ce à quoi devrait ressembler tel paysage particulier et contrariaient nos préférences quant à l’utilisation qui devrait être faite de la terre. Ainsi, bien que nous puissions croire que nos attitudes envers le monde naturel ont subi une transformation fondamentale, et que nous sommes plus sensibles aux intérêts des autres espèces, nous suivons en réalité un très vieux paradigme : nous exterminons, sans scrupule, toute espèce que nous jugeons « inadaptée ».
